1968The Inception

Founding of Grains of Time at NC State University

In 1968, Grains of Time was established on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Created as an all-male vocal ensemble, the group became the vanguard of collegiate contemporary and traditional a cappella in North Carolina, beginning a brotherhood of sound that continues to this day.

Establishing the Raleigh Tradition

Across two transformative decades, the ensemble cemented its presence throughout campus life, performing at university convocations, athletic gatherings, and community events across the Research Triangle.

Evolution into Modern Collegiate A Cappella

As contemporary a cappella expanded nationally, Grains of Time integrated modern vocal percussion, complex multi-part arranging, and high-energy staged choreography into their performances while honoring the group's foundational roots.

Active Voices, Enduring Brotherhood

Today, Grains of Time continues to represent North Carolina State University with pride, staging semester showcases, competing across the East Coast, recording studio music, and training new generations of vocal musicians.
